L.A. County residents already pay a special parcel tax to support the fire department. Approved by voters in 1997, the special tax initially cost the owner of a single-family home $48 per year. The tax goes up every year with the cost of living, capped at a maximum annual increase of 2%. For fiscal year 2019-20, the tax on a single-family home is $70.10. It has no sunset date.
Measure FD would be another “forever” tax, increasing by up to 2% per year, to pay for the fire department, a property-related service that should be funded from the property taxes that county residents already pay.
